Buhari Promises to Review Amnesty International Report

President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to review the report of Amnesty International, which accused the Nigerian military of extrajudicial killings in the northeast. The rights group detailed
different incidents of human rights violations, demanding that the government investigates five senior military officers for the deaths of about 8,000 prisoners.

The defence headquarters subsequently debunked the report, describing it as “biased, concocted and premeditated blackmail”.

But speaking in Niamey, capital of Niger, on Wednesday, Buhari said without meaning to prejudice the outcome of any investigation, his administration will leave no stone unturned to promote the rule of law, and deal with all cases of human rights abuses.

“I assure you that your {Amnesty International} report will be looked into,” Garba Shehu, senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, quoted Buhari as saying. “Respect for human rights and adherence to the rule of law are the life and soul of the democratic system. “We will not tolerate or condone impunity and reckless disregard for human rights.”
