Dear Readers,
I have been foolishly in love with a man I met on Facebook. To my surprise, on the day we were to meet for the first time, he asked me to come to Kirikiri prison, his abode for over a year, awaiting trial.
Irrespective of this, we became close to the extent, I would make out time to visit him at least four times in a week. Eventually, I took over his feeding and all associated responsibilities.
At first, he pleaded guilty to the charge of theft leveled against him but, when I came into the picture and engaged the services of a lawyer, whom I paid N100,000.00, he changed his plea to ‘not guilty.’
According to him, he initially pleaded guilty because nobody, including members of his family was ready to help him so he had no choice but to accept doing what he didn’t do.
Because of the involvement of the lawyer, he was granted bail. Again, nobody wanted to come forward to stand surety for him. I had to pay a professional surety undertaker, N50,000.00 to stand for him and even an extra N20,000.00 tax clearance for him.
To my surprise on the day of the signing of the bond, the man was arrested over a different case. On the advice of the prosecutor, I had to step in, to sign the bond for my Facebook lover. I did this without the knowledge of any member of my family, friends or office. I stood surety for him for two weeks.
He promised to marry me once he gained his freedom, even though at 21, I wasn’t desperate for a husband. Apart from being a graduate, I have a very good job.
But I bought his story because he looked innocent as well as handsome, the reason I didn’t want him wasting his life in prison.
Luckily, he was eventually granted bail and I had to accommodate him for the weekend because it was a Friday.
When I was leaving for work on Monday, he told me he would be going to the bank and that we would meet in the evening. Till date there is no trace of him: he jumped bail. He didn’t appear in court on the day his case came up for hearing so I was arrested and placed under police custody for two days and would have spent six months in jail but for the spirited efforts of my lawyer who pleaded with the magistrate to allow us pay the value of the bond, priced at N500,000.00. That was how I was let off the hook.
Each time, I call him, he laughs at me on the phone. Sometimes he would say things like; if he had asked me to run away with him, I would have declined hence his desire to have me take his place in prison
Recently, I called him to return my Nokia Lumia phone which I bought for N75,000.00 he took. He warned me never to call him again.
Agatha, what should I do? The court said I should report him whenever he shows up. I’m confused.
Confused Lover
