The new Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State has taken off.
The university, which occupies a landmass of 600 hectares and was donated by the host community, was established to create a centre of excellence and a specialised centre in the field of medical sciences
Briefing newsmen at Otukpo on Tuesday, the Chairman and Pro-Chancellor of the institution, Mr. Ferdinand Agu, said because of the importance attached to the university by the federal government, the governing council would work assiduously to establish a university that will be a centre for research.
The chairman of the governing council further said the board would expatiate and give effect to the vision of the institution and define as cogently as possible areas of its academic philosophy to ensure that the medical personnel that will be produced are of excellence.
“I think it is important for us to understand that the primary purpose, the primary function of the university is to create knowledge and to cultivate the world of knowledge,” Agu further said.
Agu said the varsity would take a peculiar look at the relationship between the institution and the host community, which he said has given incredible and warm reception to the board and hoped that the varsity will impact positively on the lives of the people.
He expressed gratitude over the humongous land donated by the community and thanked the people of the area, particularly, the immediate senate president, David Mark for showing leadership and direction.
He disclosed the cooperation of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and The Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) to the vision and said the board will ensure that the vision to make the varsity a model a reality.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Martin Aghaji expressed gratitude to the community for its gesture and vowed to make the institution a model of excellence and a centre for making leaders.
